The two videos that we were assigned to watch were , Aesthetics: Philosophy of the Arts and CARTA: Neurology neurology and Art and Aesthetics. The Article that we were also assigned to read was entitled what the brain draws from : Art and neuroscience by Elizabeth Landou, CNN.
1. For the first video, Aesthetics: Philosophy of the Arts , I learned many valuable interesting things about the connection between Art & Philosophy. For instance, I learned that in the early 20th century Art was more focused on what was considered to fit under the category of " Beauty ." Also, i acquired information about many philosophers like Plateo, Aristotle, Kant, Shopinhover and many more. They all had different approaches , principles and theories to what they thought can explain the concept of art. The main concept that i got from this video was the discovery in the late 20th century that art is basically whatever is considered art in the eye of the beholder.
For the second video, Two speakers spoke on Neurobiology neurology and Art and Aesthetics. The two speakers were Jean-pierre Changeux and Vilayanur S. Ramachandran. The speakers spoke on the discovery tools, symmetry, symbolism and Artistic Composition in the life of art. Both speakers went into detailed explanation of the connection between art and our brains. One thing i took from this video is that art is in constant evolution . Meaning that art will constantly continue to grow , change and expand.
The article was also very intriguing because it spoke about how the brain connects with art and the possibility of art having the ability to be a " lie" according to Picasso. That stood out to me because it made me think to myself " How can something that people use to express themselves be a lie ? " I learned that our brain also has the ability to trick us into thinking a work of art may have a deeper meaning than what is really there. " The human brain is wired in such a way that we can make sense of lines, colors, and patterns on a flat canvas. Artists throughout human history have figured out ways to create illusions such as depth and brightness that aren't actually there but make works of art that seem somewhat real."
2. The philosophers theory that I feel was the most important on aesthetics was Nichem . He believed in two principles of art, Apollonian and Dianesian. Apollonian refers to Apollo the god of the clear images. It is associated with the visual, associative and imaginary. It is the principle of happiness and purification through the image. Dianesian on the other hand revives from dianisis the god of wine and rivalry. It conjures the impulse to dissolve the ego. I feel like this was important because it kind of set a light way into showing the difference between light and dark in art. Giving artist the opportunity to distinguish in between the two in their art work.
3. I think changeux and Ramachandran scientific view on aesthetics and art were very detailed and pin pointed on the relationship between science and art . The most important fact I discovered from the speakers were that artist all have two things in common. Which were , Censorious Patrium , Meaning the universal search for harmony in art and secondly, they all have the attempt to share their conception of the world through their work.
4. The videos and articles relate to the readings in the text in which that they both thoroughly strain the philosophical and scientific importance that adds to art from then and now. They all explain where all the ideas, theories , and views of art have been drawn from .
5. I think the films and article were a great way for someone without any type of understanding of art to receive some. The pieces provided covered many angles in the world of art and the deep thinking and connections that are meant to be made.
